Urwerk UR-150 TA – the Urwerk Knights

Marina Milojević | 04.23.15 | 02:01 PM

Urwerk has unveiled its newest creation, the UR-105 TA, also known as the URWERK Knight.

As announced by the brand, the Urwerk Knight is 100% pure Urwerk model, distinguished by its edgy, avant-garde design, and endowed with a superior quality mechanism. The Urwerk Knight revisits the brand’s emblematic satellite indication, which has been one of the most recognizable signature elements of the brand for last 18 years. The time telling function is facilitated via four satellites, each bearing three hour numerals. The satellites are hidden underneath a guilloche black cover, and they successively reveal themselves to display time. The mechanism that propels the wandering hour satellites has been reinvented, and it now depends on the invisible carousel, which operates silently to animate the satellite hours. On previous models, the satellites were supported by an orbital cross at the top.

The new solution for the operation of the satellites brings one significant advantage: there is absolutely no friction, and no jerking movements when setting the time on the UR-105 TA. The gears move fluidly to adjust the movement at the wearer’s demand. In addition, the movement’s automatic winding is regulated by dual air turbines, which gives this model the TA suffix, which stands for “Turbine Automatic”. The bead-blasted, satin-finished, and PVD-treated turbines are revealed through the open worked case-back. The wearer can select desired winding mode by pulling the small lever. If the lever is in the FULL position, the slightest movement will wind the mainspring. The RED maximizes the excessive tension on the mainspring by reducing the winding, while the STOP mode completely disables the winding system, allowing the wearer to hand-wound the movement by the crown.

As explained by Martin Frei, artistic director and co-founder of URWERK, the bezel of the watch evokes the breastplate of a knight’s armor, which is a nice symbol, considering that the bezel protects the mechanism from the wear and tear. Its 5.02 UR automatic winding caliber is built on 52 jewels, it oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, and promises to provide at least 48 hours of power reserve.

UR-105 TA Red Gold

The case is made of titanium, and it measures 39.50mm in width; 53mm in length; and 16.80 mm in height. The UR-105 TA is available in two "classical" versions – "All Black" in titanium and steel, and "RG" in titanium and red gold – and, in a first for the brand, it also comes in more vibrant hues - Black Orange or Black Lemon. As Martin Frei further explains: "Black is one of the signatures of URWERK aesthetic. However, with the UR-105 TA we decided to push much further with color. While the black is still there, it no longer dominates; the vivid colors inspired by our SuperLuminova really announce their presence.”

The dial reveals two indicators. The first one, located at...
